CHAPTER THREE

I follow him over to a larger rock big enough for both of us to sit on. He helps me hop up, then settles on the stone next to me, angling himself so we face each other.

“This island used to be a volcano. Legend says that the gods resided here and fought over who would rule. The Hellhounds wanted it because of its volcanic properties. The White Tigers wanted it for its white, sandy beaches. The Thunderbirds loved the way the air currents traveled through the mountains, and the Mermaids wanted it for the surrounding ocean.”

He leans forward and laughs. “Of course, the Dragons believed, and still do, that they should rule because they embodied all of the elements. This triggered a great war, and that’s how the shifters were born.”

Kearn tosses his rock back to the ground as he waits for my reaction.

I shake my head. “That’s not what they’re teaching in history class.”

Kearn smiles, though it doesn’t reach his eyes. “That’s because history is written by the victors. If you go to any of the libraries guarded by the other elemental races, you’ll find something much different. When you read them all, it paints a broader picture of what really happened.”

I study Kearn’s handsome face once more. He can’t be that much older than me, but the way he talks makes him sound like someone who’s spent years traveling the world and studying. But someone like that wouldn’t be a servant at Spearwood.

Light fingertips brush my cheek, and I flush, embarrassed to be caught staring. It’s a familiar feeling where Kearn is concerned. Something about him just draws me in, like a dream half-remembered. There’s a connection, at least on my end, that keeps pulling me in his direction. A gravitational force I’m too weak to resist.

“Do you want to hear more?” he asks, his voice feather-soft, urging me to lean closer.

My voice sticks in my throat, so I nod.

If he notices my obvious crush, he’s not commenting on it, and it makes me feel like I’m not completely alone in this desire to be near him, to bask in his presence for as long as he’ll allow. My time is his until he needs to leave again, and I wish, not for the first time, that I could stop the clock and just stay with him.

His fingers skim down my cheek to my chin before his touch falls away, and he looks back at the crater in the mountain. “When the dragons claimed the island for their own and announced their supremacy over all races, the gods were unhappy. The dragons wanted the other elementals to worship them above all others. They wanted to be gods themselves.”

He picks up a piece of obsidian and chucks it across the cavern. It lands on the other side, knocking against more loose stone and creating a waterfall of rocks that bounce down to the empty basin below. “Actions have consequences, and the Sun God sent his sister, the Moon Goddess, down to Earth to remind the dragons of who their gods truly were.
